Farmwise Devon works to connect children with the sources of their food and the world of farming. After a two year break, they are back running fun events to highlight the importance of farming, food production, and the countryside in Devon.
This year, Farmwise will have a stand on Road 9 at the Devon County Show, which is running from Thursday 18th to Saturday 20th May. There will be plenty of hands on activities for children, parents, and carers including:
- Lambing a sheep, using a lambing simulator
- Turning cream into butter
- Thrashing corn to get the corn from the stalks
- Milling the corn into flour
- Milling oil seed rape to turn it into oil
- Turning apples from the orchard into juice
- Making a Farmwise leather keyring
- Guessing the poo game
- Making wildflower seed bombs
- Making newspaper plant pots and sow seeds to grow at home
- Investigating our worm farm
- Making pork pasties with some of the county’s finest pork
There will also be the chance to meet farmyard animals including goats, sheep, cows, rabbits, and pigs.
In addition to attending the Devon County Show, Farmwise have put together a resource pack to help teachers include food production in the curriculum. Farmwise will also be holding a Farmwise Schools Day at Westpoint in October 2023.
